I am an art historian with interests in public art and popular American art and visual culture. I teach Orientation in Art, American Art, and two American studies electives (Commemorative Practices in the United States and the Art of Social Change). Recently I designed and taught an honors seminar on the visual culture of the Civil War, which complemented my own research on U.S. World War I memorial sculpture and the visual culture of war.

Using primary documents in the archives, with or without a visual emphasis, led my students to better understand art as a primary source. After practicing guided looking and document analysis in the archives, my students were more likely to approach works of art in other settings with the same critical and analytical eye.
